What Is Electrical Infrared Inspection?

Also known as IR, it uses a frequency of light that is not visible to the human eye and is used to detect heat given from artificial or natural objects. The technology is commonly used to view images that cannot be seen with normal light. This technology is capable of detecting changes in human cells to detecting heat given off of electrical circuits. An electrical infrared inspection typically involves the use of a specialized microscope viewing device that shows images in the spectrum of infrared.

The electrical wires and its components are inside walls most of the time, and electricians can use IRs to inspect the operation of these elements under normal loads. Homes and commercial areas are delicate structures and it is important to use the least invasive procedures that yield the most productivity.

Electricians identify overheating elements, circuits, connections, and components with IR thermography. Professionals can implement preventative maintenance, reliability, and extra layers of safety through the use of IRs.

There are significant financial savings when using IR technology for both, professionals and clients. When using the technology, there are fewer interruptions which increase uptime and more productivity. Problems can be fixed before they ever occur, and it helps prevent any further damaged to the rest of the home or commercial building. Professionals can identify developing problems before anything serious happens to the structure, and it prevents any unnecessary emergencies, damages, or harm.

As far as safety is concerned, industrial processes can run reliably without any serious surprises down the road, which in turn produces a safe work environment. Many homes and commercial buildings have complex electrical components that run at extreme speeds. A sudden failure on one of the electric components can cause a cascading nightmare of failures that may include fire or meltdowns or damage to any device plugged in outlets.

IRs can make inspections run reliably to ensure quality results. It is not uncommon for wirings in a building to just go bad after a while. Wiring can go bad due to bad connections, faulty design, poor quality equipment, lack of maintenance, etc.

Under normal operation loads, equipment tests can be performed. The technology is noninvasive and does not require any break down of structural parts. One of the greatest benefits of this type of inspection is that it does not require a building to shut down its power. Electricians can use IRs to detect thermal insulation quality, abnormal frictions, spikes in temperature, etc. By using IR technology, potential panic times, fires, and damages to equipment can be successfully avoided. Whether you own a home or a commercial building, it is imperative to get an IR inspection, at least yearly. You can avoid any potential dangerous situations in the future by doing so.
